07 May, 2022 ENGAYGED IN DALLAS // GAVIN + ALEX
Welcome to my blog debut! I’m Josh, the Studio Manager for Steph Grant Studios, which means I’m the one you spoke with if you’ve emailed us lately. I happen to have a personal connection to these two, so Steph asked me to jump in and tell you a bit about them.
I met Gavin a few years ago through a local gay volleyball league, though we didn’t play on the same team. The league itself has a division for most skill levels and welcomes any member of our community and our allies to play. Gavin and I competed against each other on Friday nights, but our paths never really crossed more than that. After that season, we saw each other a few more times at various volleyball related events but ultimately lost touch. I was pleasantly surprised to get his email asking if Steph was available for an engagement session with him and his partner.
I think it’s easy to forget that the people we interact with in our day-to-day are fully realized individuals outside of our experience with them. To me, Gavin was the guy I played volleyball with. As a matter of fact, when I was telling Steph about the inquiry, I’m fairly certain I said that exactly. I didn’t know what he did for work or that he had a fiancé, or that they’re super into country dancing. Hearing about them from Steph and seeing their personalities and love come through in these shots redefined and deepened the connection I had with Gavin..
Have you ever met someone randomly while traveling or on vacation and then added them on social media but never speak again? You just kind of watch their life play out on Instagram and see them graduating and getting married, and you’re just like cheering them on from afar? It’s like that. I don’t have to be good friends with Gavin and Alexander to be proud of their journey and celebrate their love, and I’m so grateful to have had another opportunity to get a small glimpse of Gavin and his journey.
