09 July, 2013 SHANNON + SEEMA | INDIAN LESBIAN WEDDING | LOS ANGELES, CA.
I have been anticipating this wedding for years now! Shannon and Seema are special to me and I am honored that they chose me to be their wedding photographer. I flew into Los Angeles a few hours before the wedding festivities began. I was greeted by a house full of friends, family and a lot of laughter. It was going to be an exciting day. Beautiful Indian culture, stunning brides & style for miles! Couldn’t ask for more. I have photographed Indian weddings before and I have photographed gay and lesbian weddings before, but never have I ever shot an Indian lesbian wedding. WOW. My heart! There was so much love that consumed the SmogShoppe that evening. Friends and family came pouring in with smiles, hugs and tears… these two are clearly loved and in love. I am writing this blog a month after the wedding and I am proud to say that so much progress has been made in our country with the Supreme Court striking down DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and Prop 8 in California! In india parents still freak out at the idea of mere inter-religion marriage while Seema’s parents accepter her sexuality and allowed her to choose a soulmate. This is amazing and beautiful. Is there any way to get in touch with the brides? I’m an Indian lesbian living in a country where homosexuality is criminalized. I came out recently to my parents only to be told that I “must” get married to a boy… so i almost gave up on my own happiness. After seeing this, I realize just how much it’s worth. I’m working on a novel actually and I’m collecting stories of Indian lesbians like myself because i think it has the power to dramatically impact the live of an Indian girl somewhere in the world that is too afraid to follow her heart. But, as an Indian woman this made my heart so so happy. I loved how they carried out all the little traditions. I loved that they fed each other a cupcake (for shannon) and a laddoo (for seema). Posted at 15:13h, 22 July@Rishabh: Hinduism does not say anything against homosexuality, and any homophobia that exists in Indian society is cultural and relatively new (slowly inculcated over 200 years). A lot of Hindu royals practiced it openly in the past, and Hinduism has a lot of LGBT themes in its mythology.
Seeing these pictures makes me so happy! Steph Grant you are a very talented photographer and you have captured the love and happiness better than anything I’ve ever seen! I may get your for my wedding! (Let me find a man first.) The brides are incredibly stunning, and Seema especially seems to have such incredibly vibrant energy – what a doll!
Were the guests crying? It looked like that in a couple pictures.

My girlfriend Tiffany and I have been together 7yrs and always dreamt of a wedding like this – one incorporating tradition, accomodating two beautiful brides, surrounded by friends and family. I have never been able to envision something this perfect, however. We had even spoken about eloping, but this gives me renewed hope that weddings ARE for everyone – straight or gay – and they can be traditional!

The photographer did a wonderful job of capturing the color, the movement, the excitement of the day. I think it would be a good thing to offer India- inspired wedding clothes to boutiques here in the states as an alternative choice in wedding attire. And the jewelry was so stunning!! I don’t think I have never seen such a beautiful wedding ceremony! You can see the love in every photo you captured, what a gorgeous couple Shannon and Seema are! And what a stunning mixture of cultures.

I hope that our government comes to their senses here in Australia soon and legalises gay marriage. It has been far too long coming!

But the recent ruling has left me very disheartened……..

We are each others soulmates but due to society and family pressure we had to get married separately. Obviously the entire India must be raging with homophobia in case they see this. What an amazing woman is she to prove those people WRONG in front of the whole world.

Times are changing, and there are lots of lesbians who are quite vocal about their status in India. Hope it gets the official nod soon.

Posted at 22:15h, 04 Juneoh…….lot of comments i saw…..all are good……………..its really not posible for any llesbian…….my one of friend whom are love with her cousin from 18 years….the cousin of my friend firstly involve my friend by emotionally -phisically….and after 14-15 years suddenly cousin left her because of a boy friend and give excuse—- ”u and me are like sisters and i if i kissed you that was my and yours mistake now i want to merry and want to settle my life …the things which happend of lots of years are chieldesness so forget everything ”i m not a lesbo”————–my friend was socked……extermlly socked becaz the age difference of between them is 7 years my friend is elder then her cousin …my friend age is 35 and for last 3 to 5 years her love make her fool means one side she love a boy and second side she make fool her from past 3-5 years when suddenly she left her my friend was did lot of hard work just to know why ”she left her” she asked thousends times ”why u left me”but that girl never told about any love life of her ….she make fool and insult her regularly but never say truth…..suddenly cousin left city without information and left messege i will do arrange marriage so leave me alone and dont disturb me and dont come in my life…..my friend agreed just for her happy life……….but its not end of froudness ……friend suddenly know she left her becz of a boy whom did not liked by friend and this boy is alweys a major reason in between ”fight” of them…….she married with him with take big help of friend s elder sister………socking for my dear friend becz she also leave one boyfriend for this boy…..spoil 2 lifes …..did u know tht in how much time she believed tht cousin left her——4 years”………. now she dont want to marry with anyone becz she hurt allot…..no sociel life ……becz of tht stupid ,layer girl whom enjoy her honeymoon and left her alone after 16 years……………friend also never talk with her real sister bcz she help in cousin marriage with tht particuller boy ….so no one know tht why my friend alone in life only 2 friends know tht truth……me and other …..no family member no any other person bcz same sex marriage is a sham in here even people not accept tht….even whom did all tht (cousin)is left her on d way becz of opposite sex….child, social and sex life and dislikeing of people…………..so dear friend not every love story take shape ……..i really hurt to see my friends face no one know why she alone in her life,not married ,no more friends becz who accept lesbian;s love even not her mother father (father never knows tht type of relations….mother knows but not accept bcz mother always know abt their children –she knows everything from fights of her daughter and girl of her cousin sister)………………………..so congrets girls u did history ……..u r real heros ………………………………pry for my friend now i know she is not wrong on her place………………..thanks
